Password Composition Information
Why do we need a secure password?
Passwords are keys to access your online account and information about your relationship with FEMA. To protect your privacy it
is important to create a strong and secure password. DHS provides the following guidelines for creating a strong password.
Recommended Password Guidelines:
- Use at least 8 characters.
- Use at least 2 numbers.
- Use at least 2 upper case characters.
- Use at least 2 lower case characters
- Use at least 1 special character (ie. !#$%^*_+).
Situations to avoid:
- Don't use more than 14 characters.
- Don't begin your password with number.
- Don't end your password with number.
- Don't use tabs, spaces, or other "blank" characters in your password.
- Don't use proper nouns or the name of any person or fictional character.
- Don't use numbers specific to you such as employee serial number, social security number, birthdate, or phone number.
- Don't use any information that could be readily guessed about the creator of the password.
- Don't use any simple pattern of letters or numbers, such as "qwerty" or "xyz123".
- Don't use more than 3 identical consecutive characters in any position from previous password.
- Don't use passwords identical to any of the previous 8 passwords.
Tips to keep your strong password secure:
- Never share your password with other people.
- Never place your password in an easily accessible location (computer desk, notebook, etc.).
- Never use you email to store or transmit your password.
- Never keep the same password for longer than 90 days.
